ANNA DAM-VOLKLE, LONG ISLAND ARTIST

Artist, Anna Dam-Volkle

As a child Anna Dam-Volkle could wander almost any direction from her home in Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island and find things that would later inspire her art. Streams and fields, ponds and wetlands, woods abundant with chestnut oak, laurel and animals, country gardens, all within 30 miles of city limits and all absorbed through the impressionable eyes of a child building a lifelong fascination. With this natural playground at her doorstep and two artist parents, Anna realized at an early age that her life would involve both art and nature.

Following High School Anna studied illustration at The Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida before transferring to SUNY Purchase where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Further studies in horticulture at SUNY Farmingdale allowed her to become a sought after landscape designer and helped instruct some of the beautiful intricacies later rendered in watercolor and oil portraits of plant species. Particularly wonderful among them is a series of orchids in watercolor she has been building through the years.

For many winters following college Anna lived in Montserrat, West Indies where she painted the people, landscapes and architecture of the island in watercolor, oil and acrylics while also organizing local artisans to market their own work. Displayed in several galleries in Montserrat and St. Lucia, her bright, vibrant pieces became particularly popular with expatriates, government officials and tourists before the eruption of the semi-dormant volcano which devastated normal life on the island. These paintings remain a pictorial record of many places that no longer exist.

On more stable ground, Anna has painted extensively in Deer Isle, Maine, where she and her daughter maintain a second home. Favorite subjects include the remarkably crimson blueberry fields covering the rocky terrain as well as the weathered shacks, lobster boats and stands of evergreens that have made the island a favorite of many artists over the years.

At home in Dix Hills New York, Anna enjoys painting the beauty of flowers that grow in her extensive gardens. Although she enjoys the process of controlling the design and installation of landscapes for clients on Long Island’s north shore, she defers to natures own arrangements in her landscape paintings, skillfully minimizing compositional additions and subtractions Whether working 'en plein aire' or in her studio, Anna Dam-Volkle's work in a wide range of mediums is true to an appreciation of nature that she developed early and continues to express beautifully.
